Emma grew up in Upstate New York and started racing kids races at 9 years old while her older brother, Curtis, raced the junior races. During her junior years, Emma won a handful of junior National Championship titles on the road and in cyclocross, and two medals at the Junior Road World Championships in 2015. In 2016, she signed her first Professional Contract with Rally Cycling at 18 years old. Racing cyclocross for Cannondale / CX World and road simultaneously, Emma won eight U23 National Championships and competed in two cyclocross World Championships in 2017 and 2018. In 2018, Emma made the switch from cyclocross to track cycling. After her second year in the track program with USA Cycling, she was a World Champion and selected for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the Team Pursuit. During these years, she raced road and traveled internationally with Rally Cycling, winning the pro Criterium National Championship, finishing on the podium at stages in the Tour of California, Tour of Scotland, and more. Most recently, after winning an Olympic Bronze medal, Emma announced she would be stepping away from professional racing to pursue other dreams and put her computer science degree to work in New Jersey.

What inspired you to become a coach?

I began racing at a young 9 years of age and started working with my first and only coach at 16 years old, Kristin Armstrong. I acknowledge the importance of having a coach that is motivational and encouraging, especially as a new rider. After making the decision to step away from professional racing, I am passionate about helping new riders take the next step in their training, and giving the guidance that I was so lucky to have throughout my development and into my professional years.

Best tip for a new bike racer?

Be patient, willing to learn, and don’t take for granted any of the help you're given or experiences you have. And of course, make it fun!

Favorite ride food?

Pop Tarts - packaged well and easy to eat on the bike.

Favorite post ride/race meal?

Chicken Piccata over pasta.

Motivational warm up song:

Anything by ABBA

Best advice you’ve ever been given?

“Control your controllables.”
—Kristin Armstrong

Tell us something about yourself that people may not know.

I was a full-time college student during my first four years of professional cycling and graduated with a Computer Science degree from Union College.

Favorite words of inspiration:

“Life’s a climb. But the view is great.”

—Miley Cyrus ;)

How can you help a client reach their goal?

With experience in road, cyclocross and track, I can help athletes with different disciplines and goals. I also understand firsthand that school, or other life obligations may limit availability for training so I would work with individual needs that athletes may have. I would use my experience and knowledge that I have gained while being coached by Kristin to help a client reach their goals.
